One of the most popular JazzFest performance ensembles of the past 20 years, the dynamic group VEJI (the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation) is back led by JUNO award winning trombonist/pianist/composer Hugh Fraser. Comprising many of Vancouver's top musicians, VEJI continues to push the envelope for high energy, original contemporary jazz that is still firmly rooted in traditional swing music. Hugh keeps finding a way to write beautiful melodies over lush harmonies and exciting rhythms that is moving and toe tapping and always infused with Hugh's infectious energy.
Formed in 1980, VEJI has performed in Cuba with piano legend Chucho Valdes as well as New York City. They have worked with guest artists such as Slide Hampton, Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler and Don Thompson.
Their first album V was recorded in 1980. Classic Veji followed in 1986 and VEJI Now was recorded in 1990. A new album is in the works….
Joining Hugh will be Campbell Ryga, Bill Runge and Danny Kane on saxophones, Vince Mai and Lorae Farrell on trumpets, Brad Muirhead on bass trombone, Blaine Wikjord on drums and Al Johnston on bass.
