The Johnny Javier Quartet was formed as a trio in 2021, with bassist Ray Martens, and drummer James Evangelos. Trumpeter/vocalist Mark Ward will be joining the trio for this edition of Jazzfest. Johnny Javier graduated from Edmonton’s MacEwan University with a Diploma in Music, majoring in composition. He moved to Regina where he became a part of the local music scene. As a sideman, he has performed in music festivals, industry conventions, and for government officials. He moved back home to Medicine Hat in 2020, where he teaches music at the United Conservatory of Music.

“Kool” Ray Martens has been busy as a musician and teacher in Central and Southern Alberta for almost fifty years. He earned a Bachelor of Education with a music major from the University of Lethbridge. He’s played keyboards in local top forty dance bands in Lethbridge, Red Deer, and Medicine Hat while freelancing in combos and big bands on bass. He has been playing jazz bass in Medicine Hat since 1984.

James Evangelos is a freelance and studio musician who has performed with a diverse list of artists around Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. He graduated from MacEwan University with a Diploma in Music, majoring in performance. He regularly performs with local bands and actively participates in theater productions. He currently manages Evangelos Music and the United Conservatory of Music.

Mark Ward studied with Canadian jazz greats Phil Nimmons and Ian McDougall. He has performed in choirs, bands, orchestras and musical theater productions in Southern Alberta and BC over the last 40 years. Mark was a music educator at Crescent Heights High School in Medicine Hat and currently conducts the Medicine Hat Andante Band. He was recognized this year by the Alberta Band Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
