The Saskatchewan Suite is a brand new commissioned work from the Regina Jazz Society, written by composer/musical director Fred Stride and performed by a 20 person all-star big band of ex-patriate Saskatchewan musicians assembled from all over the world and the best of current musicians living and working in Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Suite tells the past 150-year history of Saskatchewan and its peoples through jazz music.
The piece tells the stories of everyone living in Saskatchewan and all those that have gone before, including the thundering herds of the buffalo, heard by the first Indigenous Peoples, the various settlers and immigrants coming to Saskatchewan, the clash of cultures initially, but even more importantly the inclusiveness of the society there today.
The piece paints a picture of the people of Saskatchewan, including farmers, business people, potash workers, railroaders, hockey players, storytellers, writers, artists, and soldiers marching off to war.
